CHALLENGE
With more than 8.800 employees in 13 different countries, Fortum Corporation is one of the biggest electric utility companies in Europe. With its headquarters in Espoo, Finland, the company focuses mostly on the Nordic Countries, Russia, the Baltic States and Poland. In 2013, Fortum generated an operating profit of EUR 1.7 million. The analogue video surveillance system shall be digitalized and modernized step by step, without expensive hardware costs. The critical infrastructure (e.g. tunnels and barrages) requires a flexible and reliable video surveillance system that provides safety and security. At the same, Fortum is looking for additional business value by production monitoring.
SOLUTION
After two years of intense evaluation and testing, Fortum chose Netavis Observer and has since implemented the solution at more than 30 CHP and hydro power plants, solar sites and offices. Video surveillance is thought of as an IT process. Consequently, the IT department provides video surveillance infrastructure for physical security, just like classical ICT systems. The physical security department can now fully concentrate on their core tasks. Both departments cooperate closely to provide additional business value through video surveillance at the individual sites. The distributed installation, currently consisting of around 400 cameras in 8 different countries, is managed and maintained centrally from the headquarters. With Floating Licensing, all cameras in the network are licensed centrally and the IT department deploys individual cameras independently. The feature Active Directory Integration simplifies the user management significantly while ABS ensures reliable band width management. With the Software Assurance contract, Fortum is entitled to download the newest Netavis software updates at any time.
BENEFIT
Updates and additional cameras or modules can be deployed at any time, new factories and business premises are thereby easily included in the network. With units and factories in various countries, Fortum especially benefits from this user-friendly CCTV system that serves for both safety and security, and provides additional business value by production monitoring and distribution optimization. The outstanding performance of Netavis Observer keeps hardware costs to a minimum; the proven compliance of the software allows the operation on corporate standard IT. By applying already existing hardware procurement and maintenance routines, even higher system stability is reached with only little effort.
